Whaling City Sound
This 65-year-old recording features some of the best players in L.A. and it is bright, sharp, and revealing. There’s plenty to marvel at here even if I would have wished for more ballads and fewer Stan Kenton-like brass fanfares.
I’d have to give the edge to Dave Liebman in terms of innovative creative reach. But Lakecia Benjamin more than holds her own in how she gives re-vitalizing attention to some very important musical roots.
These three area pianists offer up a mini-festival of satisfying keyboard music.
Dave Liebman’s band, like its adventurous leader, is more than willing to take a deep dive.
