It is April in New England and for local music that means one thing, it’s time to RUMBLE!.
The Slide Brothers fuse steel with gospel, Etana brings the roots back to reggae, Duke Levine steps out on his own, and much, much more this month.
April is a cornucopia of festivals and screenings, several of which feature speakers and are free. The month is capped off with the region’s top celebration of cinema, The Independent Film Festival of Boston.
A busy month that includes a pair of appearances by composer/conductor Oliver Knussen, turns by stellar pianists Evgeny Kissin and Lars Vogt. Also, the final concert this season in the admirable Music for Food Series.
[UPDATE: Yes, the Aardvark concert is happening!] Aardvark Jazz Orchestra turns 40, Mango Blue makes a one-night return, Evan Ziporyn plays Don Byron’s new clarinet concerto, drummer Brian Blade arrives with his Fellowship band, and much, much more.
The month’s standouts include Nick Cave’s Soundsuits at the Peabody-Essex Museum and two exhibitions at MassMoCA.
March is a month to hear amazing pianists – Jeremy Denk, George Li, Charlie Albright, Jeffrey Swann, Wu Han, and Lydia Artymiw – as well as inspiring choruses and unusual chamber music
The pre-festival film season features free screenings, a selection of international cinemas, many great documentary films, and a weekend of feminist films.
It’s March in Boston and that means lots of tourists and college kids wearing green things and claiming to be Irish. Take them by the hand and lead them to one of the following musical offerings around the city this month.
Forget the Superbowl and screw Valentine’s Day. There is too much great music happening in our corner of the country to waste time on such frivolous occasions. Will you need snow boots or sunscreen this month? Only time will tell! Just make sure you have some cash and your ID and you’ll be good to go.
