Weekly Feature: Poetry at The Arts Fuse

Welcome to “Poetry at The Arts Fuse.” A new poem every Thursday

In Search of Anastasia

The Tsars themselves
were brutal.  Oligarch
roller-skates; poverty
& foment.  Owning the land
you toil.  Smash the bell,
hack the rich.  Blue velvet
journalism:  Adam Smith
haunts the margins.
Unearthed by anti-Bolshevism,
the finger is not female.

Arise from the waters
of the Rhine; playmates
do not doubt.  Leonard
ascots & polka dots
with plaid with no official
identity in determined
seclusion.  Resenting
plays & movies
in an exclusive social
club in Charlottesville,
Virginia.  Purple pillbox,
gilded paisley.  Cat ghosts
the shrubbery.

These are the parakeets.
This is the Russian Imperial
Calendar.  Anastasia will
not remove her hat, will
not sit in the yellow chair.
The experts regard
a blank book, a vast amount
of circumstantial evidence.
Ingrid Bergman is Anastasia
in a fairytale of reunification.

An ear dissected by vectors,
a black veil. Anastasia
spits on the truth; Leonard leaves
her alone.
