Fuse News: 2016 Elliot Norton Awards Announced

Hearty congratulations to the 2016 Elliot Norton Award nominees and winners.

The 2016 Elliot Norton Award Winners were announced last night. The list is below. Hearty congratulations to the nominees and the awardees. I haven’t seen a majority of the shows, so I won’t say much about the results. But this time around a few comments. I am happy to see the Underground Railway, Boston Children’s Theater, and the Apollinaire Theatre Company receive recognition, but the awards have increasingly become about spreading the committee’s diminishing wealth among the usual suspects. For example, Dave Malloy is the musical flavor du jour, two of his shows served up on shiny platters by the American Repertory Theater’s Diane ‘Broadway Bound’ Paulus. Predictably, Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 won for Outstanding Musical Production by a Large Theater (weary of yet another interactive circus I skipped it, but Arts Fuse critic Jess Viator loved the show). Ghost Quartet won for Outstanding Visiting Production and that Malloy show I reviewed — it was well sung but dramatically incoherent:

With two Obie Awards, the Richard Rodgers Award, and a Jonathan Larson Grant under his belt, Dave Malloy is thought by some to be the future of the American musical. Judging by Ghost Quartet, that means we have a brave new era of amiable recycling to look forward to.

The Elliot Norton Awards have a thing for recycling, so happiness reigns. I didn’t see 1984, but Robert Lepage’s nominated Needles & Opium was far superior to Ghost Quartet.
