This is a major Bach town and, judging by this evening, no ensemble performs his music much better than H & H under Harry Christophers.
The Handel and Haydn Society
So, even though certain pieces by Mendelssohn and Beethoven seem to be turning up with greater frequency than perhaps may be healthy, there is still much to admire and look forward to in the upcoming orchestral season.
Friday’s was the first of a series of strong, interesting programs H&H is offering this season. If its success is any indication of what’s to come (and I hope it is), we should have a very special few months ahead of us, indeed.
A busy month in New England, with at least two classical music traditions kicking off the season in Boston: Longy School of Music’s free SeptemberFest and Fenwick Smith’s 35th annual flute recital at Jordan Hall (Sept 4 @ 3p.m.).
