At the age of 80, pianist Keith Jarrett can no longer perform, but his legacy is secure. “At the Deer Head Inn” is a significant part of it.
“The Old Country” is a wonderful addition to the Keith Jarrett discography. There are no stale leftovers here — this album adds a whole new course to the pianist’s extraordinary banquet.
Keith Jarrett has said that he thinks there is room for C.P.E. Bach recordings on a modern piano. He proves himself right with these 1994 recordings.
Given Keith Jarrett’s current disability, this new ECM recording is an unexpected gift to his fans.
My guess is that Keith Jarrett probably wasn’t satisfied with this performance. I wouldn’t change a note, a gesture, or a shading.
