Don Juan — Philosopher of Love

A conversation with Douglas Carlton Abrams, author of the erotically-charged novel “The Lost Diary of Don Juan: An Account of the True Arts of Passion and the Perilous Adventure of Love.”

By Bill Marx

Readers looking for a retread of Errol Flynn’s antics as the infamous lover will be disappointed — though not grievously so, given the occasional sword fights and daring escapes — in this colorful fictional recreation of the macho archetype.

First time novelist Abrams is less interested in exploiting Don Juan’s legendary conquests than in exploring what the figure’s libido has to say, today, about the relationship between love and lust, desire and delusion, man and woman.

Abrams is upfront and articulate about how this take on Don Juan revolves around the maturing of eros — the result is a rousing yarn that is not a rebuke of the mythic seducer but a tale of his possible redemption.
