Coming Attractions in Underground Music: June 2011

The biggest event this June is the Wilco-curated Solid Sound Festival at the MASS MoCA in North Adams. A couple of these bands will also be playing shows in Boston around the same time as the festival.

Wilco headline this month's Solid Sound Festival

R. Stevie Moore, the lo-fi home recording pioneer, is touring for the first time. Psych rockers Mmoss open.


Earth, O Paon. At the Middle East Downstairs, June 15, 8pm, 18+, $15.

Earth plays slow, heavy drone doom metal.

Noveller, US Girls. At Aviary, June 16, 8pm.

Noveller plays ambient drone music. US Girls play psychedelic music.


Mountains, Soft Circle, Lichens. At the Great Scott, June 20, 9pm, 18+, $10.

Mountains play blissful drone music, compiling layers of sound.


Dinosaur Jr., Off! At the Paradise, June 22, 7pm, 18+, $33.

Dinosaur Jr. will be playing their 1988 album Bug. Henry Rollins will also be interviewing J Mascis and the rest of the band.


The Strange Boys, White Fence, Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling, Doomstar! At Church, June 23, 8pm, 18+, $12.

The Strange Boys plays garage rock. The highlight here though is White Fence, which plays fuzzed out 1960s psychedelic pop music.


Solid Sound Festival, Wilco, Thurston Moore, Sic Alps, Purling Hiss, Here We Go Magic + more. At the MASS MoCa in North Adams, MA, June 24–26, $124.50.

The main event of June is the Solid Sound Festival, put together by Wilco. Wilco are playing two nights and are known to play epic, 3-hour long sets. Also playing are Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore, Sic Alps, Purling Hiss, and Here We Go Magic.

Marcus Shmickler with Keith Fullerton Whitman. At the Goethe-Institut, June 25, 8pm, $15.

Marcus Shmickler will be performing particle/matter-wave/energy, an experimental composition. Keith Fullerton Whitman plays drone music. This show is brought to you by Non-Event.


Sic Alps, Purling Hiss, Reports. At Church, June 26, 8:30pm, 18+, $12.

Sic Alps are a San Francisco garage rock band who plays catchy music. Purling Hiss plays fuzzed out garage rock.



Puro Instinct, John Maus.
At the Great Scott, June 30, 9pm, 18+, $10.

Puro Instinct play dream pop music. John Maus puts on energetic and entertaining live shows, singing his 1980s styled pop music.
