Classical Music Sampler: March 2012
This month I am simply listing concerts I expect will be great. My pick of the month is the Boston debut of a new Flute, Viola, and Harp trio, starring instrumental superstars Marina Piccinini, Kim Kashkashian, and Sivan Magen.

“Fragments for the End of Time” performed by Sequentia. Presented by Boston Early Music Festival. At Houghton Chapel, Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA. $25 general admission, March 3, 8 p.m. Boston Early Music Festival presents the medieval music group Sequentia performing “Fragments for the End of Time.” Lecture at 7 p.m.
First Monday at Jordan Hall. At Jordan Hall, New England Conservatory, March 5, 8 p.m., Free. First Monday at Jordan Hall presents Beethoven String Trio in G Major, Op. 9, No. 1; Mendelssohn Trio Trio No. 2, and piano music of John Cage, who would be 100 this year.
Frederic Chiu. At Seully Hall, Boston Conservatory, Boston, MA, March 6, 8 p.m. Pianist Frederic Chiu makes his Boston debut at Seully Hall. He will perform works of Prokofiev, Chopin, Ravel, Debussy, and Beethoven (arranged by Liszt) Symphony No. 5.
Wednesday Concert Series. At the Church of St. John Evangelist, 35 Bowdoin Street, Boston, MA, every Wednesday, 5:30 p.m, free.
March 7: Alexandre Abdoulaev (piano) and David Wilson (tenor) will perform Schumann’s “Carnaval” and “Dichterliebe.”
March 14: The Klaritas Ensemble (cello, clarinet, piano, and voice) will perform works by Jean Francaix, Brahms, Schubert and Schumann.
March 21: Emil Altschuler (violin) and Artem Belogurov (piano) will perform works by Falla, Mozart, and Ravel.
March 28: The Cleary Sisters and Guests will perform compositions by Melika M. Fitzhugh for strings and piano.
“Piteous Beauty.” Presented by Musica Sacra at the First Church Congregational, 11 Garden St. Cambridge, MA, March 10, 8 p.m. Musica Sacra presents “Piteous Beauty,” which includes Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Mass in G Minor for Double Chorus and Domenico (best known for his 550 keyboard sonatas and little else) Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater.
The Chamber Music Center of Lincoln Center and Bridget Kibbey. At the Gardner Museum, Boston, MA, March 11, 1:30 p.m. The Chamber Music Center of Lincoln Center teams up with harpist Bridget Kibbey to perform works of Tournier, Debussy, Jongen, Tournier, and Roussel.
Kashkashian, Piccinini, and Magen. At Jordan Hall, NEC, Boston, MA, March 11, 8 p.m., Free. An exciting new trio featuring three instrumental superstars—Kim Kashkashian, viola, Marina Piccinini flute, and Sivan Magen, harp—perform works of Debussy, Gubaidulina, Kurtág, Rameau, and Taira.
Masterworks Chorale. At Memorial Hall, Sanders Theater, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, March 16, 8 p.m. Masterworks Chorale performs motets by three members (including J. S.) of the illustrious Bach family.
A 20th Century Choral Kaleidoscope. At the First Church in Cambridge, 11 Garden Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA, March 17 @ 8 p.m. The Spectrum Singers perform a fascinating and varied program of vocal music from Frank Martin, Eric Whitacre, Samuel Barber, David Del Tredici Olivier Messiaen, Aaron Copland, William Schuman, and more.
Cantata Singers. At Jordan Hall, NEC, Boston, MA, March 18, 3 p.m. Cantata Singers perform works by Bach, Liszt (realized by their conductor David Hoose), and Brahms.
Chameleon Arts Ensemble. At the First Church, 66 Marlboro St. Boston, MA, March 24, 8 p.m. and at the Goethe Institute 170 Beacon St. Boston, MA, March 25, 3 p.m. Chameleon Arts Ensemble presents “into unison with the Romantic spirit,” which is made up of works by Harbison, Korngold, Mahler, Berg, and Schumann.
Kim Kashkashian, Miriam Fried & Marcy Rosen. John Gibbons. At Jordan Hall, NEC, Boston, MA, March 26, 8 p.m., Free. Harpsichordist John Gibbons presents a faculty recital.
“Music of Three Sovereigns.” At the First Church Congregational, 11 Garden St., Cambridge, MA, March 30, 8 p.m. Blue Heron presents a program which is made up of music composed for Emperor Maximilian I and Marguerite of Austria, including settings of Dido’s last words: Josquin, Isaac, and Senfl.
