New England has become more fertile ground for summer Americana, rock, and pop music festivals in recent years. From the long-running and recently-revitalized Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island and western Massachusetts’ Green River Festival to more recent additions like KahBang in Maine and the Wilco-curated Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, MA. Connecticut now has Gathering of the Vibes while the Life is Good brand bring their festival to Canton, Massachusetts this September. We even got two new festivals in Boston proper: Boston Calling, which debuted with both spring and fall editions this year, and the recent Outside the Box, which had its fair share of roots and Americana acts.

Having moved to Boston from Seattle, Washington in late 1999, I remember being amazed at the time that Boston didn’t have an equivalent of Bumbershoot, the four-day arts festival held on the grounds of the Seattle Center on Labor Day weekend. None of the above festivals are at the same scale of Bumbershoot, but things have certainly improved in New England over the past dozen years: there’s a festival just about every weekend, it seems.

Yet another new festival, The Nines Festival, debuts this Saturday, August 10, 2013, in Devens, Massachusetts, which is on route 2, near 495.

The festival will take place on the site of Ford Devens, and is being billed as a “music, art, and discovery” festival. In addition to two music stages, a comedy stage, and art exhibits, installations, and activities.

The festival is being produced by 3 River Arts of Ayer, MA and Great Northeast Productions of Townsend, MA.

Tickets are $61.15 (including Ticketmaster fees) and available here. Children under 10 are free if they are accompanied by an adult.

They are also encouraging resource sharing via Ride Post, Couchsurfing, Lyft, and Sidecar.

One of the fest acts, Shuggie Otis, was surprisingly good at Scullers two nights ago given his checkered performing history.
