Coming Attractions in Underground Music: March 2012

March brings a solid lineup of experimental music, including electronic and indie rock shows. The indisputable highlight of the month is Steve Reich at MIT.

The performance of the month — Steve Reich at MIT.

By David Cooper.

The Clippers, Cuffs, Fat History Month, Banditas. At What They Talk About, Allston, MA, March 5, 8 p.m., $5-7.

What They Talk About hosts an excellent indie pop show. Cuffs features members of Boston indie poppers Pants Yell. This show should be full of catchy pop hooks and intricate songwriting. Ask around for the address.

Scuba, Boddika, and C Dubz. At Goodlife, 29 Kingston Street, Boston, MA, March 9, 9 p.m., $10, 21+.

Goodlife Bar in downtown Boston will be hosting two heavyweight figures of the UK electronic underground: Scuba and Boddika. Scuba has been a major contributor to the birth of UK dubstep. Boddika has recently become highly acclaimed for his electronic music melding sub-bass with electro and house templates. Listening to this type of music in a club with a serious sound system is a step beyond the home listening experience.

Steve Reich, Bang on a Can, Nick Zammuto. At Kresge Auditorium, MIT, Cambridge, March 10, 7:30 p.m.

Steve Reich is a major, contemporary minimalist composer. He will be performing 2×5, Electric Counterpoint, and Clapping Music, accompanied by Bang on a Can and Nick Zammuto of the Books. At 6:30 p.m., there will be a discussion with Reich. This is not to be missed! More info.

C. Spencer Yeh, Lasse Marhaug & Gert-Jan Prins. At Studio Soto, 10 Channel Center Street, Boston, MA, March 31, 8 p.m., $15.

C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) will play an improv noise set with Lasse Marhaug and Gert-Jan Prins. Recommended to those interested in exploring the outer reaches of experimental music. More info.
